Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free festival that celebrates heritage and the built environment, new and old. Every September, you can explore hundreds of fascinating buildings across Scotland for free. Some open up once a year, some just once in a lifetime.
Doors Open Days is a national event run by the Scottish Civic Trust. Information about the national programme, including event listings, can be found at www.doorsopendays.org.uk. Doors Open Days, along with Scottish Archaeology Month take place throughout Scotland and are part of European Heritage Days – an initiative which promotes a sense of community and a “common heritage” throughout the continent.
Programme Highlights:
Barrhead Men's Shed
Barrhead Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where both men and women can feel at home and pursue practical interests with freedom and independence. Men’s Shed offers people in the community, the opportunity to try something new and meet new people. The venue has an equipped woodworking workshop, with facilities where members can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while chatting to other members.
Greenbank Parish Church
Greenbank Parish Church was built in 1884 and is a thriving church in the heart of the Clarkston community. The church itself has a number of notable features including stained glass windows, a mural and carved woodwork in the chancel.
Masonic Temple: Lodge Union and Crown No.307
An excellent example of 1920s red sandstone construction, the Masonic Temple of Lodge Union and Crown No.307 stands not just as an icon of town history, but also as a meeting place for masonic bodies and community groups alike.
Whitelee Visitor Centre and Windfarm
Whitelee is the UK's largest onshore windfarm, located on Eaglesham Moor just 20 minutes from central Glasgow. Its 215 turbines generate up to 539 megawatts of electricity, enough to power over 350,000 homes. Whitelee is a great destination for a day out with the whole family.
