Doors Open Days is a national event run by the Scottish Civic Trust. Information about the national programme, including event listings, can be found at www.doorsopendays.org.uk. Doors Open Days, along with Scottish Archaeology Month take place throughout Scotland and are part of European Heritage Days – an initiative which promotes a sense of community and a “common heritage” throughout the continent.

2018 Programme Highlights:

The main building contains 3 appliance bays, Offices, Lecture Room, Canteen, Rest Rooms and a Hazard Room which is used for visiting persons / children to identify dangers within a household environment.

Barrhead Men's Shed
Barrhead Men’s Shed is a place for both Men and Women to get out their house and enjoy company in the Shed chatting with other members, reading papers and books while enjoying a cup of tea/coffee, or taking part in other hobbies like woodwork, model making glass and stone painting for which the building is ideal.

Cathcart Cemetary
Join Roger Guthrie of the Alexander Thomson Society at the Brenfield Road entrance for a guided walk around this late Victorian cemetery. Cathcart Cemetery contains the graves of several prominent Glasgow architects, including John Campbell McKellar, the tenement designer and builder.

Clarkston Community Fire Station
Clarkston Community Fire Station opened in September 1970. This is a great opportunity to go along and view at close hand the fire fighting equipment and vehicles on display.

Eastwood Park Theatre
Eastwood Park Theatre re-opened in February 2007 after being transformed, at a cost of £1.75 million, into a lively and exciting arts venue. The refurbished building now boasts a modernised auditorium with increased seating capacity; an innovative and versatile gallery space; an airy workshop for arts and craft classes; and a stylish café bar complete with free wi-fi access.

Giffnock Synagogue
Visitors will be given a guided tour of this beautiful synagogue with full explanations on the Jewish faith. They will be shown the magnificent stained glass windows by John C. Clark, famous Scottish artist.

Greenbank House and Gardens
For gardening inspiration, Greenbank Garden is unbeatable. This surprising oasis of tranquillity and beauty is set less than a mile from Glasgow’s bustling Southside suburbs. Built for merchant Robert Allason in the 1760s, Greenbank Garden is an impressive celebration of west coast domestic gardening, featuring more than 3,600 named species of plants. Visitors can take a stroll around the garden or relax by the soothing water feature.

Lodge Union & Crown, Masonic Temple
The Lodge Temple was erected in 1910 at a cost of £1,446. The building is constructed from red sandstone from the Ballochmyle Quarries. The memorial stone was laid in full Masonic honours by the Provincial Grand Master, Bro Zachariah Henry Heys. It later became a category C(s) listed building in 1980 where it is noted as a 2-storey Scots Barionial Revival building with a turret feature. An extension was erected in 1994.
An excellent example of 1920’s red sandstone construction, The Masonic Temple of Lodge Union and Crown No.307 stands not just as an icon of town history, but also as a meeting place for masonic bodies and community groups alike.

Neilston Parish Church
The current building dates from 1760 and reopened in 2004 after a £1million restoration. An excellent example of 18th century Scottish ecclesiastical architecture noted for its stained glass windows and 15th century window.
This church is well worth visiting!

Newton Mearns Parish Church
While our present church was built in 1939, we trace our roots back to 1739. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing something of our history, our commemorative windows, artefacts donated over the years… the story of our church.
