People who live, work, volunteer or go to school in Thornliebank will get their first ever opportunity to vote on how £25,000 of public money is invested to have a positive impact on the lives of people in the area.
People are being invited to attend a fun voting event between 11am – 3pm at the Thorntree Hall on Thornliebank Main Street on Saturday 16th March. There will be twenty stalls, with projects ready to talk about what they would like to achieve with the funds, ranging from individuals, established groups and organisations likeThornliebank Seniors Group, a Self-Directed Support Forum and 94th Glasgow Beavers as well as local schools and nurseries and more.
A steering group of local people have been planning to make the voting process simple, transparent and fair. This approach, of local community members having a direct say in how public funds are spent, is known as participatory budgeting and one of it’s aims in Scotland is to tackle disadvantage and promote equality. The steering group want to reduce barriers to taking part so the vote will be as accessible as possible, all on the ground floor of Thorntree Hall, and with assistance available to those who need it, and with voting open from the age of 8 upwards.
Voters can pop in at any time between 11am and 3pm and will be asked to speak to projects, learning more about what is available in the community and hopefully, make new links. Each voter will be given four coins and asked to vote for three different projects. Those projects with the most support will be awarded funding, which could be to start a fishing club or a historical society or bring Indian dancing to Thornliebank. A funding announcement should be made around 4pm.
As well as bringing Thornliebank Together to decide how to best make a difference to people’s lives, the aim is to have a fun and attractive day, with music, balloons, face painting and tea, coffee and cakes available. If you can contribute or help out on the day, the steering group would love to hear from you on firstname.lastname@example.org or 07393 752540.
