Some fling for everyone!
Expect a day of real traditional Scottish family entertainment at the East Renfrewshire Highland Games!
It's the first National Highland Games of the season, taking place at Rouken Glen Park on Saturday 21 April, expect a day of real traditional Scottish family entertainment and entry is free.
This year East Renfrewshire has its very own local team competing in the Strong Man Competition!
Three man team, Lewis Pollock and Kenny McDonnell, both 28 and Gavin Dalgleish, 26, have absolutely no competitive Highland Games experience but the hopeful lads are full of fighting talk about the other 6 teams that they are going up against which includes star of the show, Highlander World Champion and Cowal Games Champion, Gregor Edmunds.
The three chaps are all fitness instructors at Eastwood and Barrhead Sports and Leisure Centres and they are remarkably confident of their chances. "We will be put the world champion through his paces to see if he can retain his titles, admittedly he is a foot taller and three feet wider than the three of us put together but we are all training incredibly hard and hoping for some beginner’s luck!”
Activities starting at 11.00 am and full games start at midday with competitive caber tossing, hammer throwing, weight over bar.
Also new this year, are Celtic sensations, lively drum and pipe combo Clann An Drumma, plus there will also be traditional Pipe Band music from with Neilston Pipe Band.
There will be Highland Dancing Competition from Myra Miller Dance School, arts and crafts fair, children’s entertainment, welly throwing competition for the mums, historical re-enactments for the dads plus farmer’s market and food stalls that cater for all appetites.
Last year, the Highland Games at Rouken Glen Park attracted crowds of around 15,000, with lots of families enjoying all the atmosphere of the games, plus all of the children’s activities and entertainment on what was a beautiful sunny day!
Fingers crossed that we will all require factor 15 and the sun will shine on another fantastic Highland Games event.
