East Renfrewshire Council has launched the app, which is available to download now.
It gives users access to the library catalogue, e-books, magazines and a wealth of information 24 hours a day.
Benefits of the app include:
Instant access to the library catalogue - if you spot a book you like while out and about, scan its barcode and the app will search the catalogue to see if it’s in stock. You can then reserve and collect from a library near you.
Renewing your books or DVDs - Use the app to log in to your library account and renew any time.
E-books – choose from a huge range of e-books and e-audiobooks available to download, including bestsellers, children’s titles, fiction and non-fiction.
Other services available via the app include access to the Encyclopaedia Britannica; Transparent Languages Online, which is a fun language learning tool; and a free online driving theory test programme.
Convener of community services and community safety, Mary Montague, said: “East Renfrewshire Council is rightly proud of its wonderful library staff and facilities and this brilliant new app is another example of that.
“It’s free of charge and gives you access to your library in the palm of your hand, any time, anywhere.”
“It’s an excellent addition to the services our libraries offer and it is already proving hugely popular with our members.”
Also just launched is the libraries’ free online magazine collection, which gives library members access to a wide selection of popular UK tities, such as Hello!, Ideal Home, Men’s Fitness, New Scientist, BBC Good Food and more.
The service offers the chance to read the full digital copies of magazines free of charge from your PC, smartphone, tablet or Kindle Fire.
Another facility now available within local libraries is free access to family history website Ancestry.
Ancestry contains hundreds of thousands of records and indexes from all around the world, including census data, military records, wills, passenger lists, personal stories and much more.
Library members wishing to trace their family tree can use Ancestry free of charge from any PC in East Renfrewshire libraries or on a mobile device in those libraries that are wireless enabled. There are WiFi spots in Clarkston, Giffnock and Mearns libraries.
