Inspired by the history of early nineteenth century, Rouken Glen Park owner, Walter Crum - eminent scientist and industrialist in the textile field, whose family was responsible for the growth of Thornliebank through the calico print works.
Students have been working on print techniques to create the artwork that will be turned into gobos and projected in the Electric Glen Lighting Festival.
East Renfrewshire Convener for Education, Councillor Elaine Green explains, “Our school children have pulled out the stops to design their own print patterns. The standard is high and there are some very creative ideas.
“One winner will be chosen from each of our seven secondary schools and runners up will have their work exhibited in Rouken Glen Park Pavilion.”
All designs are submitted on a sheet of A4 paper and have now been submitted.
Primary schools are taking part in a similar project with a January 31 deadline.
Electric Glen Lighting Festival 2014 is the second year that Electric Glen is running in Rouken Glen Park, East Renfrewshire.
Running for eight nights from 6-9 and 13-16 February 2014, over two long weekends (Thurs-Sun) around the half term holidays, the family friendly event will feature an hour long artistically lit route through the stunning natural landscapes, full of quirky light installations, street theatre and interactive activities.
A new route for Electric Glen 2014 will take visitors along wooded pathways through the glen, with its dramatic waterfall, to the ornamental boating pond. A family fun trail, with visual, sound and performance based clues to discover along the way, highlight the social history of the park.
At the end of the trail the boating lake will host a series of fun interactive activities for children and adults alike, including ‘Splosh’ – which will turn throwing stones into the water into a truly magical experience and ‘Curling’ is given a new twist!
Council Leader Jim Fletcher said: “Whether you’re local to the area or plan a visit to Glasgow in February next year, Electric Glen 2014 will be a great night out for everyone. It’s a stunning natural landscape and this year will explore a whole new aspect of Rouken Glen Park’s unique social history, which all ties into being part of Homecoming Scotland. Electric Glen 2014 is supported by EventScotland.”
Electric Glen will run for eight days from February 6-9 and 13-16 with entry between 5.30pm and 8.30pm each evening with tickets bookable for 20 minute time slots. The route takes about one hour to complete (or longer should you care to linger).
Tickets cost £7.50 (adults), £5 (children/concessions/disabled including free ticket for carer) or £20 for a family ticket (2 adults / 2 children). Under 5’s are FREE. Some parts of the route are not ‘wheel’ friendly so disabled access lakeside and waterfall only tickets are available for £3.
To book online visit www.electricglen.co.uk or call the box office on 01655 798007 (Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm). All tickets are subject to a £1.50 transaction charge
Rouken Glen is six miles south of Glasgow (15 minute drive from the city centre) just off J3 of the M77 with ample parking for cars. Alternatively there is a half hourly direct train service from Glasgow Central to Whitecraigs Station (20 minute journey time) with direct access into the park.
Electric Glen aims to provide a fantastic experience whatever the weather; however visitors are advised to dress accordingly – warm clothes, waterproofs and sensible outdoor footwear. It is also recommended to bring a torch as the trail will be dark in places.
Electric Glen is a Homecoming Scotland 2014 Event, supported by EventScotland, East Renfrewshire’s – A Place to Grow Campaign and Heritage Lottery Funding.
