Youngsters from the Our Lady of the Missions primary school’s Eco group worked side by side with members of the Druids of Caledon and parks staff recently to plant 400 small saplings in Rouken Glen Park.
Activity park ranger Kate Williamson, who organised the three hour event, said: “I planned a tree-planting session at the tree circle in the field just over the waterfall in Rouken Glen Park. This is so that we can establish a lovely native hedge around the circle to make it stand out as more of a feature."
Woodland Trust Scotland provided a hedgerow tree pack comprising 400 whips which are 6-8 inches in height made up of dog rose, beech and hawthorn.
Kate was joined by members of the Druids of Caledon, who regularly hold their equinox ceremonies at the tree circle and 15 members of the Eco-team from Our Lady of the Missions primary school.
Environment convener Councillor Vincent Waters, who also lent a hand, said: "It was great to see the pupils from Our Lady of the Missions so full of enthusiasm and getting stuck in despite the heavy rain.
"It will have been a memorable and exciting event for the planters who will have the pleasure of revisiting the site in the years ahead to see their saplings grow into tall trees to enhance the beauty of this spectacular and popular park."
John Tucker, Woodland Trust Director of Woodland Creation, added: “The UK has just 13% woodland cover compared to a European average of 44% and the trees we do have are under increasing threat from diseases and development."
“By teaming up with communities like East Renfrewshire, the Woodland Trust is working to double our native woodland cover and enrich our landscape. It’s also great to get the public out planting trees, hopefully providing people with an experience they will remember forever.”
The investment by East Renfrewshire Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund into Rouken Glen Park also continues to grow with further improvements in the park to look forward to including the new play area by summer, plus lots of other events and activities.
