The Whitelee Stroller Striders have been chosen as a case study by Paths for All, a Scottish charity.
Whitelee is one of just four ‘buggy walks’ to feature on the Paths for All website.
And the hope is the Stroller Striders success story will encourage others to set up similar groups, by sharing their experiences.
The group has been running for successfully for over three years. It meets weekly and has had up to 28 parents and babies coming along to enjoy the four-mile walk around the wind farm.
The Paths for All case study outlines how the group was set up, how it runs, how people might benefit from taking part, and what the challenges have been and how they were met, and it has plenty of advice for would-be new buggy walk groups.
Countryside ranger Maree Morrison, who manages and leads the group, explained how Whitelee Stroller Striders came about.
“We saw a small group of parents out for a walk one day and we thought Whitelee was a great place for a parent and baby walking group.
“It’s a great group to be part of and it seems to be ticking along successfully three years in.
“We walk approximately four miles, which takes around one and a half hours with parents pushing their babies wrapped up in their pushchairs or strollers.
“We can have anything from eight to 28 walkers on any given week. We also have about six walkers who came with their first baby and have come back with their second baby too, which is great!”
Research has shown that the more active a mother is, the more physically active her child will be. A study by Cambridge and Southampton universities, which used heart-rate monitors to measure activity levels of 500 mums and young children, found mums and children showed a direct, positive association between physical activity in children and their mothers. It also concluded that children are not ‘just naturally active’ and that parents have an important part to play in developing healthy exercise habits early on.
