The challenge will call for participants to take 10,000 steps a day, mounting up to an incredible 480,000 steps each over the summer break. This amounts to around 227 miles or walking from Barrhead to Manchester.
Steps can be recorded on any device that is available to the young person – such as a FitBit or App. Free pedometers are also available to those committing to the challenge by calling 0141 577 3658.
To get some friendly competition going, the Council is encouraging participants to upload images and videos of their walks and progress to the official East Renfrewshire Council Facebook and Twitter accounts, over the summer holidays.
A trip to tackle Ben Lomond on Thursday 26th July is also being arranged to help keep the motivation going and you can register your interest by emailing email@example.com.
The Year of Young People is a platform for young people from across Scotland. It aims to give them a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents, and ultimately, aims to challenge the status quo and create a more positive perception of them in society.
East Renfrewshire Council has hosted a range of activities for young people over the last six months including educational excursions, LGBTi national youth gathering, holiday programmes and the eight week Comedy and Confidence programme.
In addition to the summer step challenge, there’s plenty to come over the remainder of 2018 in East Renfrewshire, including a film making project this summer for care experienced young people, the youth awards ceremony in November as well as a host activities in schools.
Councillor Colm Merrick, Convener for Community Services and Community Safety, said: “We’ve had so much fun over the last six months supporting the Year of Young People. The summer step challenge will be incredibly rewarding as young people commit to moving every day and maybe even get a little competitive with each other.
“Whilst it’s aimed at young people, it’s a great way for the family to get out and about and enjoy walking together every day over the summer break – let’s hope the good weather continues.”
