Residents show support for new leisure facility

Local residents have shown their support for a new leisure centre to be built in the Eastwood area with 54% voting for this option in the recent consultation.

The results of the public consultation on the future of leisure provision in Eastwood will be considered by councillors on Wednesday 12 September.

With 3,601 responses from residents through the council's online consultation tool and hard copies, it is one of the biggest responses ever to an East Renfrewshire consultation.

Of the four options which were set out during the six-week consultation, residents showed a clear desire for a larger facility to be built on a new site with a wider offering of services.

In total, 1,865 (54%) of respondents voted for this option as their first preference, giving it more than the other three options combined.

The other options put forward were to run the current centre on a maintenance basis only, refurbish the current centre or redevelop the existing site with an extension.

Of these options, the next most popular preference was to redevelop on the existing site, with 1,131 (33%) of first preference votes.

The least popular first preference option is refurbishing the current centre, which received only 198 (6%) of first preference votes.

The council sought the views of the public to consider the best way forward for providing leisure facilities which meet residents' needs in the future.

The current Eastwood Park Leisure complex was built more than 40 years ago and both the building and swimming pool are now reaching the end of their natural lifespan. Carmichael Hall and Eastwood Theatre also require major renovation and refurbishment if they are to remain fit for purpose.

As well as highlighting the results of the consultation, the paper going before councillors also notes that a report outlining options for sites will be brought to a future council meeting.
