Imbolc: The First Festival of Spring
This is the time, in Scottish folklore, that the Cailleach, or old Woman of Winter, would journey to the sacred woods of Caledon. On a magical Island where the miraculous Well of Youth lies.
As the new dawn appears, she drinks the water that cradles in a crevice in the rock, and is transformed into Bride, the fair Maid of Spring.
She has many names, but known in Scotland as Bride, and there are many versions of her story. Another, that she is kept prisoner by the Cailleach all through the winter in the snowy recesses of Ben Nevis. Then to be rescued by the Cailleach's son, who falls in love with her, and then elopes. Only to be challenged by his mother, who brings on fierce storms, in her attempts to keep them apart.
Celebrated on the 1st of February, Brides day is the first of the four great fire festivals, and stands at the gateway to the seasons of the New Year
