The UK Government announced further restrictions in order to control the spread of COVID 19. Because of this, we are now closing Beat the Street at 10pm Monday 23 March 2020. Points are being counted and the winners of the game will be announced soon.
An innovative game that has already helped more than one million people get active is coming to Giffnock, Thornliebank, Clarkston, Busby, Eaglesham & Waterfoot, and Neilston from 19th February to 1st April.
Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to ditch the car and see how far they can walk, cycle or run in a bid to win prizes for their community or school team.
It has previously been commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council from February to March 2019 across Barrhead and Newton Mearns where participants travelled a total of 62,071 miles during the competition.
Beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes will be placed on lampposts around the area for the duration of the game. Pupils at participating primary schools will be provided with fobs while their parents and teachers will receive a card from the school so they can accompany the children. These can then be registered to the school team to help them to score points.
The wider community can pick up a contactless card from a distribution point, a list of which are available on the website. Players then walk or cycle between the Beat Boxes which are spaced half a mile apart – tapping the fobs or cards as they go. The further players travel, the more points they score.
Information regarding coronavirus / COVID -19
Dr William Bird, founder of the Beat the Street game, said: “Beat the Street is continuing to follow government advice regarding coronavirus / COVID -19. In light of recent announcements, the Beat the Street game will continue to operate as it takes place in open spaces and does not involve mass events.
If you have not been asked to self-isolate then you are welcome to continue to play individually along with members of your household and get some fresh air. Beat the Street is a physical activity programme that encourages people to get outside and walk or cycle more.
The aim of Beat the Street is to increase physical activity and reduce stress. Both these factors have a significant effect on boosting the immune system. While playing the game we ask you to only touch the Beat Box with your card or fob and not your hands.”
Please don’t let anyone else use your card or fob and follow government advice at www.hps.scot.nhs.uk
