It was founded in May 2020 during lockdown due to the closure of local libraries and to provide access to books and other items. Currently, every Saturday there are two grey boxes full of books that can be borrowed as well as pink boxes full of free children’s books, DVDs, games etc that do not need to be returned.
We aren’t affiliated with any East Ren library and you don’t need a library card to use, just pop down and help yourself and return the books at your leisure to the box marked ‘Returns’. The Street Library has been recognised in both Scottish and UK parliaments for providing a safe, much needed service to the local community and helping to recycle books and other items during the Covid-19 pandemic.
There are instructions on the boxes regarding Covid-19. Hand sanitiser must be used before AND after going through the boxes. All the books are in sealed zip lock bags and should be quarantined for 72 hours as per government advice on goods. When you are returning a book you've borrowed, please place it in the Returns box in the original provided zip lock bag.
