Barrhead Big Clean Up

About Barrhead Big Clean Up

The Barrhead Big Clean Up, taking place on Friday 24 October, will see the Council spend the day tackling litter and fly-tipping hot spots across the town to help keep East Renfrewshire beautiful.

WHEN: Friday 24 October, 9am - 12pm
WHERE: Locations across Barrhead
GET INVOLVED: email ercbigclean@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and you'll be sent a sign up form

East Renfrewshire continually scores high in litter cleanliness levels, achieving 94.9% in 2024/25, as measured by Keep Scotland Beautiful who monitor litter across Scotland, however the Council is not complacent. It recognises that littering and fly-tipping can have a detrimental effect on communities and the wellbeing of residents, so these big clean up events allow problem areas to be targeted and give residents a sense of pride in their town.

The Council wants to involve the local community in this event, so anyone willing to do some litter picking on the day, can sign up by emailing ercbigclean@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk. All equipment will be provided. Barrhead schools, community groups and businesses have also been invited to play their part.

This Barrhead event, which will be the first in a series of town clean ups across East Renfrewshire, coincides with the launch of a new litter strategy for the local authority which commits to improving open spaces across East Renfrewshire. Aligned to A Place to Grow, the community planning partnership vision, this strategy aims to build positive change in behaviours with litter and waste across East Renfrewshire.

East Renfrewshire Environment & Housing Convener Danny Devlin said: “A clean and well cared for East Renfrewshire is important to us all. We want to work with our partners and communities to support a cleaner environment for us all to flourish, thrive and live well. Our vision is to Keep East Renfrewshire Beautiful and this is exactly what our big clean up event aims to do.

There are already fantastic community litter picks taking place across East Ren and we know most of us dispose of litter responsibly, but the minority who don’t, spoil it for the rest of us. This event will allow us to tidy up problem areas but also highlight that littering and fly-tipping isn’t acceptable; with over 500 public bins, plus your household bins, there really is no excuse. I’d encourage anyone who can, to get involved in the big clean up – I will see you there!”
