Whitelee Stroller Striders
Whitelee Stroller Striders started in 2011 and is a popular walking group for expectant and new parents with babies!
About Whitelee Stroller Striders
The group has seen over 500 parents and little ones enjoying the fresh air and access opportunities at the windfarm and is a great way of meeting other parents, chatting, and getting some healthy exercise.
The walk isn't too strenuous, and the distance fades while meeting other new and expectant parents. New members are always welcome and no booking is needed - just come along and meet the ranger and other members at the start for ~10am any Tuesday and join in.
Where and When
The group meets at 10am every Tuesday morning, come rain or shine (but only if you want to!), next to the large threshold map at the main entrance to the windfarm just down from the visitor centre. We normally set off around 10.15am, allowing everyone time to arrive and get their babies snuggly tucked up in their strollers.
One of the Whitelee Countryside Rangers takes the group off on the walk from the visitor centre with the little ones tucked up in their prams/pushchairs and the parents wrapped up in conversation. The ranger accompanies the group all the way, acting as guide for the group as well as providing first-aid cover and assistance when needed - often pushing an empty pram when one of the little ones needs out for a hug.
Walk Length and Duration
From the visitor centre the group heads along the windfarm tracks for approximately 2 miles to turbine 56 before returning to the Whitelee Visitor Centre, where the group often stop for a coffee and well earned rest.
The route goes east around the back of Brown Hill (mountain bike trails) before stopping at the junction just past turbine 54 where the ranger checks everyone is happy to continue on - in bad weather the group may opt to return to the visitor centre rather than continue.
Assuming everyone is happy to go on, the next stop is either turbine 56 or the Blackwood Hill viewpoint, depending on the weather - this is the halfway point where everyone gets a chance for a quick breather and a check of the hopefully snoozing babies, before returning to the visitor centre. On the return leg the group head around the western end of Brown Hill and back to the visitor centre for a well earned rest...and maybe a cuppa and cake!
On average the group are back at the visitor centre between 11.30am and 12noon, with the walk taking approximately 1.5 hours.
Who can Come
The group welcomes new and expectant parents as well as grandparents/family members and friends, well behaved dogs! We regularly have 6 - 8, even 20 walkers taking part and it's an interesting sight to spot them snaking through the windfarm.
Winter
Through the winter months of December to February when the visitor centre is closed, the strollers go 'on location' visiting the partners of the Whitelee Countryside Ranger Service in Rouken Glen, Calderglen and Dean Castle. Before the closure of the visitor centre for the winter, a tour programme is produced showing the routes and where and when the group will be at each park over the winter.
We meet at 11am during the winter to allow more time to arrive.
