Beat the Street East Renfrewshire winners

Beat the Street, the walking and cycling initiative that has helped get more than 7,500 people moving across East Renfrewshire has announced the game's winners!

Together, the community walked, cycled, ran and wheeled nearly 70,000 miles. The game was scheduled to last until 1st April, but organisers brought the game to an end early amid the outbreak of Covid-19.
The winning teams are as follows:

Schools – total points:

3. Carolside Primary School

Community and workplace – total points:

Unfortunately, the planned celebratory event will now not take place; winning teams will receive their prizes by post and email. However, players are invited to keep hold of their cards and fobs for now as they’ll be useful for future events and activities.

Catherine Dillon-Ruddy, Head Teacher of Our Lady of the Missions Primary school said: “The pupils within Our Lady of the Missions are delighted to have won ‘Beat the Street’ and their enthusiasm has to be commended. They fully embraced the competition and pupils from primary one to primary seven enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a council wide initiative which involved their classmates, friends and families. The competition allowed for the pupils to develop their physical health as well as their mental health by spending time outdoors. We appreciate all the time the Beat the Street team have given in encouraging our pupils to be more active. We hope that our pupils will continue to spend time walking, running and scooting with their families. Thank you to all of the staff who supported the pupils in those efforts.

“Lastly but certainly not least we would like to thank the families and friends encouraging and volunteering their time to support our pupils in ‘Beat the Street’. Our school motto is ‘Children on a Mission,’ this philosophy certainly was evident during the competition! We have ambitious plans to enhance our outdoor learning and play areas so the vouchers will be put to great use in enhancing our learning spaces.”

Councillor Tony Buchanan, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: “Congratulations to all the winning teams in Beat the Street East Renfrewshire and well done to every person who participated. Together you have done great things for your health, and once we’re all allowed to get back outside, we hope the game will encourage people to rethink how they travel around and that walking or cycling to school or work is a fun, free alternative to using the car.”

Iain Mulholland, local coordinator for Beat the Street East Renfrewshire added: “Now, more than ever, it’s essential to keep building your immune system to ensure your body is as strong as possible to fight the virus, which you can with regular exercise where possible.

“We’ll still be on hand with a new programme called #BeatTheBug where you can sign up for newsletters containing hints, tips and advice on how you and your family can stay fit, get active, reduce stress and have fun at home. There will be regular Beat the Bug advice and Q&A sessions with our founder, Dr William Bird MBE, who is a doctor working on the NHS frontline, an expert in physical activity and an advisor to the World Health Organisation and Public.”

Beat the Street East Renfrewshire has been commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council with support from Paths for All's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme. It is being delivered by Intelligent Health.
