East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure works in partnership with Scottish Swimming to deliver the Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification (SSTQ) course, which combines practical pool learning with online training. Candidates shadow qualified swim instructors in the pool and support young swimmers in East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's Learn to Swim lessons.
The next SSTQ training course takes place 31 May - 6 July, with potential candidates encouraged to apply now.
Course instructor Gregor Barr said: "In our most recent SSTQ course, we had a range of ages and swimming abilities and they developed into confident, competent swim teachers. It is suitable for everyone.
"It's a great course that provides you with skills and qualifications, as well as having a positive impact on people's lives."
Participants who complete the course can progress to paid employment as swimming instructors with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure.
Mearns Castle pupil Jodie Carrigan completed her lessons before moving to a swim team and is now set to help young children develop their swimming skills.
Jodie said: "It's nice to get back to swimming through teaching. I was inspired to help young people as swimming is a basic life skill as it's important for safety reasons. It's also good fun and great for fitness.
"I've met a lot of new people on the course, made friends and it's nice to connect with young kids and make them smile."
Karen Baxter, Swimming Development Team Leader at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: "Our SSTQ courses train our swim teachers of the future and enable us to continue to support the next generation of swimmers in developing their confidence, skills, safety awareness and competence in the water.
"We look forward to working with our next group and providing them with all the support they need to complete the course and progress to paid employment as swimming instructors."
East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's new SSTQ swim teacher training course takes place 31 May – 6 July.
