The awards aim to celebrate the efforts and achievements of schools, sports clubs, community groups and the outstanding individuals within these organisations. Individuals and groups are recognised for their partnership work with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's Active Schools and Sports Development teams to drive sport and physical activities for children and adults. There are seven categories and eleven awards available. Locals are being encouraged to have their say and nominate their sports supporting superstars by 25 June.
The winners will be announced at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's Sport and Physical Awards ceremony at Clarkston Hall on Wednesday 24 September at Clarkston Hall.
Ian Pye, Head of Sports and Physical Activity at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “Our annual awards recognise individuals and groups who support and encourage people in our community to participate in and develop their sporting abilities, alongside our teams.
“We would like to invite the local community - parents, teachers, young people and individuals in the community - to review the categories and think of those who have supported you or your children with sports in the community or at local clubs. We would love to recognise their efforts and dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of our local community.”
Categories include Volunteer of the Year, Project of the Year, Young Leader of the Year, School of the Year, Community Club of the Year, Community Coach of the Year and Outstanding Contribution. Nominations should cover the period July 2024 - June 2025, with the exception of the Outstanding Contribution Award.
Last year's winners included Marcella Traill from Mearns Gymnastics Club, who scooped Young Coach of the Year, while Alex Edmonstone from Whitecraigs Rugby Club was names as Coach of the Year. Basketball Paisley was awarded Club of the Year, as Samantha Tochel from All Stars Junior NetballERs was named the Club and Community Volunteer of the Year. Busby Primary School was named as the Primary School of the Year, while St. Ninian's High School took home the trophy for the Secondary School of the Year. Jon Jewitt from Whitecraigs Rugby Club and Paul Brogan from Barrhead Youth Football Team were both presented with Outstanding Contribution awards.
