75 local individuals and groups were nominated for their sports support, including coaches, volunteers, officials, community clubs, young people and schools, at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's annual Sport and Physical Activity Awards, hosted at Clarkston Hall.
The ceremony recognises those who work to develop and drive sport and physical activities for children and adults in our local communities, ensuring wide and varied opportunities are on offer, for personal development or success, or to create lasting legacies.
Sports volunteers were recognised, including Rebecca Currie who scooped Volunteer of the Year (Young person), James Gribble was named Volunteer of the Year (Schools and Education) and Damien De'Silva and Roslynn Davidson were jointly recognised as Volunteer of the Year (Clubs and Communities). Mearns Gymnastics Club took home the title of Club of the Year, recognising the amazing contributions that all their coaches, officials, leaders, volunteers and gymnasts make, in ensuring the club is a welcoming environment for all.
Jessica McCambridge from Mearns Gymnastics Club was named as Young Coach of the Year, while Callum Hull took the Young Leader of the Year award. Calum Forrester from GHA Rugby Club was named Coach of the Year.
Schools were also recognised for their contributions to delivering inclusive sporting opportunities, with Netherlee Primary School named as the Primary School of the Year and Willliamwood High School receiving the Secondary School of the Year award. Mearns Castle High School's Empowering Young Leaders Through Sport, an S4 Girls Leadership Initiative, was named as Project of the Year.
The Outstanding Contribution Award was presented to coach and caretaker Alan Stern, who recently retired from his janitor role at Eaglesham Primary School. Alan helped organise and coach the schools extra-curricular clubs which have benefited thousands of pupils over his years of service. The range of clubs Alan was involved in included athletics, badminton, football, rugby and cycling proficiency and these out of school hours clubs have helped to shape attitudes to inclusion and disability.
Ian Pye, Head of Sports and Physical Activity from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “We are thrilled to recognise the dedication of these inspiring individuals and groups who work with our Active Schools and Sports Development teams to support and develop sports and physical activity in our local communities.
“Their continued support is invaluable and we want to thank and congratulate all of our nominees and winners, whose fantastic work and dedication was showcased during our awards ceremony.
“We look forward to continuing our work and support of all the individuals and groups, focused on the health and wellbeing of our local communities.”
