Aurs Road project nears completion
The transformation of Aurs Road, which is the main route between Barrhead and Newton Mearns, is nearing completion.

It has been confirmed that the road will re-open on Friday 29 May 2026, with works to build a safer road, an active travel route, a waterside promenade with far reaching views across the reservoir, and a new car park progressing well.
As the project enters its final phases, the Council will continue to work closely with the contractors and Scottish Water to complete the remaining works.
Final surfacing is under way, structural works to the dam, relocation of high voltage cables and promenade works are in progress, with the landscaping and installation of benches and public realm progressing well too.
The project has been challenging, with a range of factors having impacted the timescale for delivering the works, including ground conditions, moving unmapped utilities and the excavation of a former water works structure, as well as an area of subsidence requiring part of the scheme to be redesigned.
Councillor Owen O’Donnell, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: “We appreciate the patience of all our residents throughout these works and recognise that they have been disruptive. I’m pleased that this major project is nearing completion and that we have a confirmed completion date. While it’s taken longer than expected, these improvements will be worthwhile in the long-term, providing better transport links and an impressive waterside promenade to benefit local communities. We’re confident that the road will be open by 29 May, unless any extreme weather conditions arise in the coming months.”
The Aurs Road project is part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, a £1billion partnership between eight local authorities, the Scottish Government and the UK Government. The City Deal has delivered over £550 million in local infrastructure investment to date across the eight local council areas and is estimated to have attracted more than £880 million worth of follow-on investment since being launched in 2014.
