There was a great turnout to the four bin collection roadshow events which took place across East Ren recently.
The cleansing and recycling team would like to thank everyone who came along and asked questions about the new service and what it would mean for them. The majority of residents who attended welcomed the new service which is set to replace the current box, bag and sack method of collection. The new service will see residents move to a four wheeled bin collection. Two new recycling bins will be rolled out to all households, and residents will retain their current grey and brown bins.
A green bin will be provided to collect glass, cans and plastics and a blue bin for paper and cardboard, including the addition of corrugated cardboard and cartons. These two bins along with residents’ grey bin for non-recyclable waste will be collected on a three weekly rotation. There will be no change to the brown bin service with food and garden waste continuing to be collected every week. These changes will begin in Autumn 2016.
Last year East Renfrewshire Council spent £2.2million to send household waste to landfill, much of which could have been recycled. Food waste, in particular, is being sent to landfill instead of composted. With the move to three weekly collections of all other rubbish, residents will be asked to put their food waste in their brown bin which will continue to be collected every week.
Where people are recycling everything possible, there will be fewer and fewer items going into their rubbish bin and many residents reported that they only put their bin out once every four weeks at the moment. However, some households with larger families expressed concerns about the capacity of the new service and have been advised that if they can show they’re doing all they can to recycle, adequate provision will be made.
Residents who live in flats and terraced properties spoke to the team about their concerns about bin storage and the council will be looking into these over coming months prior to the new four bin service being rolled out.
The council will also be consulting with those households where there is no direct kerbside or where there are storage issues, to develop alternative solutions for these properties. Residents living in such properties will be communicated with directly in the next few months.
The team also met some of the area’s most enthusiastic recyclers and were able to answer questions about what happens to recycling once it’s been collected.
They also learned from residents that there is confusion about the types of plastics that can be recycled. The council will provide information about recycling plastic when the four bin service starts this Autumn.
A further event is taking place in May to enable locals who didn’t make it along to the roadshows to ask anything they want to know about the new four bin collection service. Cllr Vincent Waters, Convenor for Environment, will be answering questions in a live Q and A on Facebook. Join him on Monday 16 May between 7-8pm, or send in your questions in advance with the subject line ‘four bin service’ to communications@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk
