Adult classes are aimed at individuals looking to engage in art for relaxation to improve their wellbeing and mental health, while kids classes will support primary aged children in using art to explore their feelings through creativity and imagination. Both classes will use art therapy techniques to encourage participants to express themselves and get creative in a friendly and sociable environment.
The Art and Wellbeing Classes will be led by qualified art psychotherapist and community artist Fiona Rich.
Fiona said: “I’m looking forward to beginning these new groups to share some of the creative skills that can help you to relax and destress.
“I believe that everyone can benefit from being creative and that making time to express yourself works wonders for your physical health and mental wellbeing. These sessions are for anyone who is interested in learning more about how to use art-making for relaxation and to process your thoughts and feelings. You do not have to have any art experience or creative talents, just an open mind and willingness to get creative and see what art can do for your wellbeing!”
Adult classes will touch upon art therapy techniques, with the class participating in a combination of self-directed art-making and creative activities, with a variety of materials available. Children will participate in a combination of self-directed art-making and creative activities led by the tutor, using a variety of materials that will allow them to express themselves.
Moira McFadden from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure said: “These new classes have been designed to support people in the community who would like to get involved in something creative which will improve their wellbeing.
“Many people have been shielding, isolated or participating in less activities over the last eighteen months. This is a chance for people to integrate back into the community using art therapy techniques to help them to start socialising and supporting their wellbeing. Everyone is welcome and the classes will cater for all levels and abilities.”
Art and Wellbeing Classes will take place at Fairweather Hall in Newton Mearns:
