Dementia Walking Buddies is being piloted by East Renfrewshire Carers Centre (ERCC) thanks to a funding award through Shared Care Scotland.
This health initiative that provides support for people living with dementia, is appealing for volunteers and participants to join its rank.
The service is free of charge and will provide a one-to-one volunteer support for individuals living with dementia to attend an organised health walk, or an individual walk. An activity which not only benefits the person living with dementia, but also give their carer some time for themselves.
Participants are carefully matched with a friendly and trained volunteer based on shared hobbies and interests and are visited once a week at home by them before heading out on a walk and being returned back home safely.
Farah Maiza, Volunteer Coordinator with Dementia Walking Buddies, says: “Many people living with dementia have difficulty negotiating walks and could benefit from some company and support.
“The Dementia Walking Buddies will offer the participants a range of benefits, including improved confidence plus increased mobility and fitness.
“In addition, participants and volunteers will feel they have something to contribute to their community by sharing knowledge through conversation.”
However, to be able to run the project, ERCC are looking for people who would be interested in becoming a volunteer. The role of volunteers will be to support the person living with dementia while out on a walk.
“Becoming a walking volunteer should be a very rewarding position.”
Volunteers will receive free training and on-going support. Out-of-pocket expenses will be provided, too. The time that volunteers can give each week is open for discussion.
