Author Lesley McDowell will discuss her latest novel Love and Other Poisons at Clarkston Library on Tuesday 18 November (7-8pm). Set in 1857 and based on the true crime case of young socialite Madeleine Smith, with local connections to Giffnock and Rouken Glen, who is on trial for murdering her lover in a scandal that shocks the world.
Giffnock Library will host a Book Café with author Maureen Cullen on Thursday 20 November (10.30am-12pm). The debut author’s book, Kitten Heels, is a coming-of-age story, set in 1960’s working class Clydeside and told from thirteen-year-old Kathleen’s perspective, dealing with issues of poverty, mental health and the role of women.
Award-winning children's author, Alastair Chisholm, will visit Neilston and Giffnock Libraries to meet with pupils from local primary schools, giving the chance for young readers to engage with the author, learn about his writing journey and share their love of reading.
Scott Simpson, Head of Libraries and Information at Enjoy East Ren, said: “We look forward to welcoming authors Lesley McDowell, Maureen Cullen and Alastair Chisholm for inspiring and interactive author events during Book Week Scotland.
“Our library team will also share stories with primary one classes from across East Renfrewshire as we invite them to special gifting sessions to receive their P1 Family Bags in their community libraries.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone along to our libraries to join the national celebration of books and reading.”
Mearns Library will also host a hands-on zine workshop on Wednesday 19 November 6-7.30pm), exploring friendship through art, words and collage. Participants can make and fold their own mini magazine that tells a story of friendship, with resources provided.
Campfire stories sessions for children will also take place across East Renfrewshire libraries throughout the week.
