There’s less than two weeks to go until the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in East Renfrewshire.
And today we can reveal some of the chosen few who will be carrying the baton through the streets.
Heather Anderson will be our very first batonbearer in Uplawmoor.
The 83-year-old will take the iconic emblem from Provost Alastair Carmichael and get the historic day for the area under way.
Heather will be the first of 114 batonbearers taking part in East Renfrewshire and will set off from the village’s Mure Hall at 7.30am.
She was nominated for her massive contribution to her local community – she has lived in Uplawmoor for 77 years.
Proud Heather said: “I am delighted to be nominated – really thrilled. It’s absolutely fantastic to be starting off the day in East Renfrewshire.
“When In was told I was going to be a batonbearer and that I would be running with the baton, I said ‘I’m 83. I will be walking smartly!’”
Heather is a board member of Uplawmoor Community Council, convener of the community hall, church board member and sings in the church choir.
The community-spirited resident also started up a Friday soup kitchen.
On the sporting front, Heather is an accomplished golfer – she played for Great Britain and Ireland, won the Scottish Ladies Championship in 1969, turned out for Scotland for nine consecutive years, then featured as a selector for the Curtis Cup. Her age does not deter her from helping out junior golfers.
Joining Heather on the streets will be four members of council staff – three members of the sports services team and a fourth who works in business support.
David McLeish, senior sports development coordinator, will run in Clarkston. He said: “It’s an honour to be asked to be a batonbearer. We are representing our Active Schools and sports development teams.”
Barry Cook is the council’s senior Active Schools coordinator and will run in Barrhead. He said: “I was absolutely delighted to be chosen. It will be fantastic to be involved with such a momentous and historic event.”
Marie Baxter is also part of the Active Schools team and works as a coordinator. She said: “Carrying the baton is a real privilege and I will be carrying it for all those people that I have worked for and met throughout my career and community work. The pupils at the schools I work with are super excited they know someone who is carrying the real baton. They said they will there on 16 July to cheer me on!”
She will also be one of Barrhead’s batonbearers.
Carrying the baton in Busby will be Eleanor Morris, who works in business support for the council. She was chosen for going the extra mile to organise events and away days for local youth, community and church groups.
The baton will visit every part of East Renfrewshire, finishing in Barrhead for the spectacular evening celebration.
