Young players from East Ren’s basketball development league were thrilled when two players from the Glasgow Rocks, Scotland’s only professional basketball team, dropped by to watch them in action.
Fraser Glass and Tayo Ogebengbe came to Eastwood High to inspire the next generation of basketball players, offer tips and advice to the budding young players and answer their questions.
East Renfrewshire’s development league is now in its second year and follows the sustainable model used by Basketballpaisley. After securing a grant from ‘Awards for All’ for year one, the league uses local high school pupils as officials thanks to education training.
The sports services development centres from Woodfarm, Neilston, Mearns and Williamwood compete along with Basketballpaisley’s East Renfrewshire Lakers on a monthly basis in a competitive league structure.
The partnership between East Renfrewshire and Basketballpaisley has already seen some players make the transition from the local development centres into the national pathway structures.
Convenor for community services and community safety, Councillor Mary Montague, said: “Glasgow Rocks’ visit to Eastwood High has certainly inspired our young basketball players. The youngsters in our basketball development league enjoyed hearing about the players’ experience of being part of a professional sports team and gaining first-hand knowledge of what it takes to excel in sport and the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices.”
Lindsay Lang of Basketballpaisley said, “I am delighted to see that the new East Renfrewshire basketball development league continues to gather pace in an enjoyable and fun environment. Now in its second year, the monthly programme has given many girls and boys the opportunity to participate in competitive matches involving five separate community clubs. Not only have participation rates in the sport increased during this time, but also many players have honed their skills and graduated through the performance pathway to compete in regional and national events. Basketballpaisley is pleased to support the programme and continue to develop close links with East Renfrewshire sports development team.”
Daniel Bajwoluk, general manager for the Glasgow Rocks, said: “A large part of being a professional basketball player in Scotland is partaking in various community events around the country and spreading the word about the great sport of basketball. Tayo Ogebengbe and Fraser Glass are great ambassadors of the sport in the UK and both attended the East Renfrewshire development league where they shared some of their own basketball experiences and stories. Hopefully they can inspire the next generation of basketball players to follow in their footsteps.”
