Knitted by volunteers from the University of the Third Age, the ladies teamed up with the Barrhead baby café to pass on their gifts this week.
Based in Auchenback Resource Centre every Thursday afternoon, the Barrhead baby café is an informal social place for mums to meet, have a cuppa and some cake, and tap into peer support and advice about all aspects of breastfeeding. A health visitor or nurse is also on hand at every baby café.
Around ten local mums have also been trained as breastfeeding peer supporters to provide one-to-one support to new mums. These peer supporters will also be available to offer support to mums on the phone too.
Peer supporter Maree Turnbull, from Barrhead, said: “I became a peer supporter because I didn’t get much help myself and I wanted to help other mums. It gives people the confidence that they can breastfeed too when they are given the right support.”
Debbie Wilson, community nursery nurse, added: “Breastfeeding is recognised as a preferred way to feed infants and has a wide range of benefits for mother, baby and the community as a whole. Working together with the NCT (National Childcare Trust) means East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership can support and promote breastfeeding. The baby café is a great way for new mums to socialise and meet other mums too.”
The weekly Thursday afternoon café is aimed at all pregnant or breastfeeding mums and their partners.
The baby café is an internationally recognised model of breastfeeding support and represents a place where breastfeeding is regarded as the normal way to feed infants.
East Renfrewshire HSCP works in partnership with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) to run the baby café every Thursday from 1.30 – 3.30pm at Auchenback Resource Centre, 64 Aurs Drive, Barrhead, G78 2LW.
