Attainment continues to rise with very strong Higher and Advanced Higher results and record-breaking performance in S4. These achievements are a tribute to the hard work of pupils, exceptionally well supported by our staff and parents, all of whom contribute to this impressive performance in the Council area.
As thousands of children from across the area celebrate their achievements today (Tuesday 6 August) East Renfrewshire Council’s Convener for Education and Equalities, Councillor Paul O’Kane, has welcomed the results.
Councillor O’Kane said: “It takes hard work and dedication to achieve such fantastic results and once again our pupils across the whole area have raised the bar. With record-breaking National 5 results, as well as another extremely strong performance in Higher and Advanced Higher results, the achievements of our pupils never cease to impress me. These results are a tribute to the hard work of pupils, exceptionally well supported by our staff and parents, all of whom contribute to this impressive performance across the area. It is also extremely pleasing that the S4 and S5 attainment gap has been narrowed which highlights that our approaches to learning and teaching from the earliest stages are continuing to deliver strong results. Well done to everyone for another year of excellent results.”
Key achievements include:
• 78% of S4 pupils across East Renfrewshire achieved 5 or more National 5 passes (up from 75% in 2018) – the best ever performance.
• 20% of S4 pupils achieved 8 or more As at National 5.
• Eastwood, St Ninian’s and Woodfarm high schools all achieved best ever S4 results.
• St Luke’s High School had its best ever performance for the proportion of pupils achieving 5 or more awards at National 4.
• The proportion of S4 pupils in Barrhead High who achieved 5 or more awards at National 5 increased by nearly 9% to 60%, the second highest result ever.
• 44% of S5 pupils gained 5 or more Highers – the second highest performance ever.
• Barrhead and Williamwood High School had their best ever S5 results for 5 or more Highers.
• Mearns Castle High School maintained very high attainment across key S5 measures.
• 165 pupils across East Renfrewshire achieved 5 or more As at Higher.
• At Advanced Higher in S6, the performance across the authority was also very strong with 40% achieving 1 or more Advanced Higher awards.
In working towards East Renfrewshire Council’s vision for Education – Everyone Attaining, Everyone Achieving through Excellent Experiences – a systematic, detailed and rigorous analysis of pupil performance, from nursery through to secondary, is used to ensure a targeted approach for every child.
This rigorous tracking and monitoring system focused on each individual pupil is at the heart of the council’s success in raising the bar for all.
Mhairi Shaw, Director of Education at East Renfrewshire Council, said: “Our approach is clearly having an impact as year after year our pupils continue to produce outstanding results. We continue to see improvements right across the board, with children from all backgrounds achieving their potential. Our approach recognises that all children progress at a different pace and need to be supported appropriately. We take a rounded, holistic approach to develop the whole young person. A hugely successful vocational training programme is also in place across all our schools as we continue to provide more opportunities for pupils to access courses and qualifications through college, as well as apprenticeships. This allows us to support all our pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and experiences they need and to make the best choices for them, preparing them effectively for their future career path. These results are testament to the hard work of pupils, teachers and parents and I congratulate you all.”
