Authors celebrate Book Week Scotland 2025 at East Renfrewshire Libraries
Libraries across East Renfrewshire celebrated Book Week Scotland (17-23 November 2025) with a series of author events and workshops.

Lesley McDowell discussed her latest novel Love and Other Poisons at Clarkston Library, Maureen Cullen attended Giffnock Library for a Book Cafe event and award-winning children's author, Alastair Chisholm, visited Neilston and Giffnock libraries to deliver interactive workshops with pupils from Braidbar and Neilston primary schools.
Alastair said: “Book Week Scotland is a fantastic project going across schools, libraries and the whole of Scotland. People are coming into libraries, delivering events and authors are going into schools and chatting about what makes great books. It's a fantastic thing as it focuses on what we absolutely love about reading. I think we're all storytellers and stepping into someone's brand new story is amazing.”
Maureen Cullen, author of Kitten Heels, added: “It's so important for the Scottish book industry that Scottish books are highlighted in Book Week Scotland. It gives us a platform so we can spread the news that we're there and that we write books that have Scottish interest. It's also important for the general reading public to realise that libraries are active and involved in all that's going on in the publishing world. It shows that books are live things that people can enjoy. They can be life-changing.”
Enjoy East Ren's library team welcomed primary one classes from across the area to enjoy stories and attend special gifting sessions to receive their P1 Family Bags. Mearns Library also hosted a hands-on Zine workshop, exploring friendship through art, words and collage.
Scott Simpson, Head of Libraries and Information at Enjoy East Ren, said: “Book Week Scotland has, once again, been a great success across our libraries and we'd like to thank everyone who visited our libraries and attended all of our fantastic events.
“We welcomed three wonderful authors, Alastair Chisholm, Maureen Cullen and Lesley McDowell to engage with readers at our libraries, inspiring a love of learning and reading amongst adults and children alike. We also hosted a range of events, invited primary one pupils to receive their book bags and welcomed children along to our campfire stories sessions throughout the week.”
