Celebrating Adult Learners Week

Adult Learners' Week is to be marked with a series of events in East Renfrewshire.

East Renfrewshire Council has organised a number of different sessions during the week, which runs from 18 to 24 May.

All of the events are free and everyone is welcome to go along.

Kicking off the local programme is Intro to IT, which takes place in Carlibar Primary School Learning Centre in Barrhead on Monday 20 May, from 1.30 to 3.30pm.

It offers the chance to find out about the range of IT classes available from the council. You can also get hands-on experience of using computers.

On Tuesday 21 May, a World Cafe will be held in Albertslund Hall, Newton Mearns, from 10am until noon.

This is for people who are on English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses. It will be a chance for learners to brush up on their English with the help of senior volunteers. All welcome to join in.

At Clarkston Library, Write in the Head will see the launch of a collection of poetry, prose and memoirs by the ‘a way with words’ creative writing group.

This group have been working with the Recovery Across Mental Health organisation to produce a 20-page magazine with poetry, prose and memoirs.

It receives a special launch at Clarkston Library on Tuesday 21 May from 6pm.

Also part of the series of events is Preparing for Employability, which also takes place in Carlibar Primary Learning Centre.

This session, which takes place on Wednesday 22 May, will offer information on how the council can help people back into work.

From 1.30 to 3pm, find out which groups are available in your area that provide help with job searches, CVs and other IT support that can help you meet your employment goals.

And on Thursday 23 May, Writing for Pleasure will offer tips and techniques to those interested in creative writing – with a little fun along the way.

This event will be held in Auchenback Resource Centre, Barrhead, from 1.30 to 3pm.

All East Renfrewshire’s events have been organised by the council’s adult and family learning services.

Elaine Green, convener for education and equalities, said: “Our adult learning team offers an excellent service to anyone who wants to learn new skills, brush up on existing ones, find a route into employment or voluntary work or just meet other people in a supportive setting.

“I would encourage people to go along to one of our Adult Learners’ Week events – I am sure they would find them informative, helpful and fun.”
