Dementia Walking Buddies project aims to provide a one-to-one volunteer support for individuals living with dementia to attend a health and wellbeing walk. This would not only benefit the person living with dementia, but also give his/her carer some time for themselves.
Once a week a trained and friendly volunteer will visit you at home, accompany your cared for, for a walk and then return back home safely.
We carefully match the participant with a volunteer based on shared hobbies and interests.
Farah Maiza, Volunteer Coordinator with Dementia Walking Buddies, says: “Many people living with dementia have difficulty negotiating walks and could benefit from some company and support.
“The Dementia Walking Buddies will offer the participants a range of benefits, including improved confidence and communication skills, plus increased mobility and fitness.”
“In addition, participants will feel they have something to contribute to their community by sharing knowledge through conversation.”
What are the conditions to benefit from Dementia Walking Buddies service?
• The participant and his/her carer need to live under the same roof within the East Renfrewshire local authority.
• The participant needs to have a good mobility.
What Dementia Walking Buddy cannot do?
Volunteers are not paid and therefore they cannot:
• Provide any form of personal care or help with medication.
• Do household tasks such as cleaning, tidying or meal preparation.
• Help with mail/finance or completing forms.
Charges for Dementia Walking Buddies Support?
The service is free of charge.
