Remember to register to vote!

East Renfrewshire Council is calling on local people to register to vote in the 2014 European Election on May 22.

The council aims to increase the number of people who are eligible to vote by and to encourage as many people as possible to put their X in the box at polling stations next month.

The deadline for registering to vote is May 6 – so residents are being urged to do so today.

Anyone not able to make it along to a polling station on May 22 and who would like to vote can apply for a postal vote – applications must be made by the registration date of May 6.

Anyone who misses the deadline for registration will not be able to vote in the European Parliament elections.

This means missing out on the opportunity to influence decision-making in Europe.

The European Parliament has a big influence on how we live our lives. Decisions made in Brussels affect everything from our jobs and working conditions to recycling, energy and climate change. The UK is bound by certain laws that are made in Europe.

So voting gives local residents a say on important issues that affect you – and a candidate will be selected to represent you whether vote or not, so by voting you have the chance to say who represents you.

Council chief executive Lorraine McMillan said: “Many people assume that they are automatically on the electoral register because they pay council tax – this is not the case.

“Others turn up to vote and find out that they are not on the electoral roll because they forgot to tell us that they have moved house.

“We would urge everyone to double check that they are on the register before the May 6 deadline.”
