Plans for the replacement building will now be submitted ahead of starting on site next summer.
It is scheduled to be completed by December 2016.
The new school will be built in Cowan Park, where the Johnny Kelly Pavilion currently is.
Welcoming the unanimous backing of the council, convener for education and equalities, Councillor Elaine Green, said: "We will now be proceeding full steam ahead with the fantastic new Barrhead High.
"I’m delighted that the pupils, staff and parents now have a guaranteed delivery of their new school.
"Although we have had to find a new site, it will be built to the same high specification as the original design – only a few tweaks are required.
"And the new designs look amazing – it really will be a school for the town to be proud of."
A new Johnny Kelly Pavilion will be built, the skate park relocated, and a planned but unstarted cricket wicket created. All will help create a first-class sports campus in the park, alongside the newly-opened 3G pitch and the sports facilities that are planned for the school, which will be available for community use.
The designs for the new school campus show an amazing modern building with a beautiful boulevard entrance.
Because the council had to find an alternative site for the school after the first choice was ruled to be ‘common good’ land, an additional £3 to £3.5 million has been found to cover the additional costs. These include flood mitigation work and the relocation of the pavilion.
The existing Barrhead High will remain open throughout the building work with no disruption to the pupils’ education.
The school is being jointly funded by the council and the Scottish Futures Trust.
