Scotland Stars FC author Danny Scott welcomed pupils from Carolside Primary to Clarkston Library and St Cadoc's Primary to Mearns Library for fun-filled interactive story sessions. Danny read an exciting extract from his book series and helped pupils create their own hero and villain characters, culminating in a penalty shoot out.
Danny said: "I was lucky enough to be invited to Mearns and Clarkston Libraries and met some super enthusiastic primary four pupils who came up with fantastic stories as part of Book Week Scotland. I think it's essential for events like this to take place in our libraries as they're such an important part of our community."
Author Louise Gray joined the Book Week Scotland celebrations, delving into her book, Avocado Anxiety, at Clarkston Library. Louise explored the food stories behind our favourite fruits and vegetables, the impact that growing them has on the planet and how we can make decisions that make a difference.
Louise said: "I write about food and the environment, and since we all eat it is of interest to everyone. It was great to do a talk at Clarkston Library and discuss how our fruit and vegetables could be produced in a more environmentally friendly way in Scotland and globally. The audience was a range of ages and opinions and we had a passionate debate about the joys of composting, why disused public land is not planted with vegetables, the best kind of apple variety and how we can be less anxious about avocados."
Alastair Dinsmore MBE of The Glasgow Police Museum led an illustrated talk centred around The History of the City of Glasgow Police 1800s-1975 at Giffnock Library. Alastair served for thirty three years on the Glasgow force and was awarded an MBE by the Queen in recognition of his services to police heritage.
Scott Simpson, Head of Libraries and Information Services at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: "Book Week Scotland is a fantastic celebration of books and reading. We were pleased to welcome so many people along to our libraries for our fantastic, free author events, talks and activities and to celebrate the week with our local community. Our library team also enjoyed sharing stories with primary one classes from across East Renfrewshire as we invited them to attend special gifting sessions to receive their P1 Family Bags in their community libraries."
