Teaching & Shadowing:
It is recommended that you shadow a swimming lesson teacher for 5 hours before the course starts and that you continue to shadow during the course, to give you the experience necessary to teach children on your own. This can be arranged by contacting Karen Baxter. Please note, shadowing must be carried out at either Barrhead Foundry, Eastwood High Sports Centre, Eastwood Park Leisure or Neilston Leisure Centre.

These teaching hours must be signed off by the teacher supporting you, or the lesson co-ordinator at the centre they were carried out in. The hours can be teaching at any level but a broad range of different levels are recommended. All of the above shadowing and teaching, pre and post course, will be unpaid until you are fully signed off and ready to teach by yourself.

After the course has finished, you may be required to complete further teaching hours before your qualification can be completed.

How to Apply:
If you are 16 years of age and over and wish to become a swimming instructor, please contact Karen Baxter in the first instance to see if spaces are available on the course. If spaces are available, one will be reserved for you. Once the reservations are full, with a max capacity of 12 candidates, the course will go ahead.

The cost of the course is £575. You must have a Scottish Swimming Membership (£12) before you sign up for any courses and pay the course fee of £575. Please only join and pay for a course if you can attend all dates, all fees are non-refundable. Guidance and instructions to sign up for your £12 Scottish Swimming Membership can be found here. If you already have a Scottish Swimming membership or it has lapsed, please do not take out another membership, just log into your account and use your existing Scottish swimming member number. If you have forgotten your login details, please e-mail: info@scottishswimming.com. Once you have your Scottish Swimming Membership, you have a “JUST GO” account with Scottish Swimming and you can apply for any course. You will be sent the link to join the course.

You may qualify for £100 subsidy and, if you meet the eligibility criteria, the £100 will be deducted from the course fee of £575. If you do not qualify for the subsidy you will need to pay the £575 in full. To find out if you qualify for the £100 subsidy, you must log into your Scottish Swimming “JUST GO” membership account and follow the instructions, which can be found here. Once you have completed these steps, you will then be sent the link to apply for the course, where the subsidy will be deducted at the check-out.

Please note: this course is NON REFUNDABLE and all dates MUST BE ATTENDED.

After signing up to the course, you will be invited to carry out some online pre-requisite work, which should take no longer than 30mins to complete.

This qualification will enable you to source employment as a Swimming Instructor within East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust’s Swimming Development Team.
