Douglas started a Garden Centre in Dundonald, Ayrshire in 1980 from scratch. It was reknowned for water features for the garden as well as being an excellent garden centre.
He retired from it in 2017 but continues to give talks to gardening groups like Bachs.
Tonight, he will illustrate the history of the R.H.S. since its inception and then give a presentation on the Chelsea Flower Show 2023 in glorious technicolour.
16th October: People, Places, & Potatoes by John M Marshall
Starting on his father’s potato Farm in Perthshire in the 1950’s to the shores of Lake Titicaca in the Andes, John has an extensive knowledge of the humble potato.
People first started cultivating potatoes 10,000 years ago in South America and they have emerged as a food of immense global importance.
He will extoll the virtues of the potato as a food and how it is produced, travelling to China for research & Peru in search of original methods of the Incas planting at an altitude of 4,000metres.
13th November: The Phoenix has Risen by Keith Brand
Keith is in the process of taming his late father’s allotment which has become somewhat overgrown.
Over the last few years, he has had the daunting task of bringing it back to production.
He will offer hope, inspiration, and put some myths to rest about this gardening lark. Let’s see what can be done with some hard work, no dig systems, utilizing cover crops, recycling & upcycling in the garden situation.
He will then show the results from the first full year’s growing system at various Shows around the country.
15th January: The Cut Flower Garden by Theresa Talbot – following on from our short AGM
Extremely well connected as you can see, Theresa is a Glasgow based author, presenter, and flower arranger who hails from Busby, and offers online advice on various horticultural issues.
Best remembered as the presenter at Clarkston when we hosted the Beechgrove Potting Shed, she comes with a talk on how to get the best from a cut flower garden.
Commencing with sowing methods, through to cultivation practices and finally the end product. She has some varieties for cut flowers we maybe wouldn’t have thought of.
Talk follows on from our short AGM at 7.30pm
19th February: Scone Palace Gardens & Grounds by Brian Cunningham
Brian is the Head Gardener at Scone Palace and current presenter on BBC Beechgrove Garden and he will highlight the history of Scone and the development of the gardens under his tenure.
