Sibelius Symphony No. 5
In 1903, Carl Nielsen and his sculptor wife Anne Marie were in Athens, when he composed his famous Helios Overture. It depicts the sun rising and setting over the Aegean Sea. The Flute Concerto was written in 1926 for Holger Gilbert-Jesperson who was flautist of the Capenhagen Wind Quartet.
Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony evokes the vast emptiness of Finland’s landscapes and its inspirational swans. It’s his majestic and deeply personal response to nature.
The Estonian conductor was formerly Music Director of Sarasota Orchestra in Florida. She is now Music Director of the Nordic Symphony Orchestra, and is regarded as ‘one of the most captivating and versatile conductors on the international scene today’.
