Join Tracy Harrison Butler as she examines Glasgow’s calico printers from the 1750s until 1931 and discusses East Renfrewshire’s domination in the calico printing industry throughout that time. The talk will also discuss how the industry’s decline was sped up by its amalgamation into the Calico Printers’ Association (C.P.A.) in 1899, and why, today, there is little physical evidence of what was once a thriving industry in East Renfrewshire.
In response to the current cost of living crisis, we have decided to offer tickets for this event as ‘Pay What You Can’ to allow participation by people who might find cost a barrier. We hope this makes the event more accessible to those who want to come. These tickets will be sold purely on an honour system – we will trust that those who do not need the discount will not use up the limited supply.
About Tracy
Tracy qualified as a theatre set and costume designer, from Central Saint Martins, London, but realised, fairly early on, that she preferred researching the history of dress and textiles, rather than creating costumes and backdrops. After running her own business as a graphic and website designer and a stint working on Outlander, she realised she wanted to turn to research properly, and at the end of last year, completed a Master’s Degree in Dress and Textile History at the University of Glasgow. She specialised in the economic history of the calico printing industry in Glasgow focussing more specifically on the Crums and East Renfrewshire. She is now working on a proposal for a PhD, concentrating on calico print copyright and design registration.
