People of all ages are invited to ditch the car and get active as Beat the Street East Renfrewshire gets underway in Barrhead, Newton Mearns and Neilston on Wednesday 2nd March.
Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives by rewarding teams with points and prizes the further they walk, cycle and roll.
There are prizes for the teams that travel the furthest with vouchers for books and sports equipment. There is a total points leaderboard and an average leaderboard so opportunities for teams of all sizes to win.
Prizes include: £300 in sports vouchers for the top teams on the total and average points leaderboards for schools and also for community teams; £250 for second place, £150 for third place and £100 for fourth place. Additionally, the charity SupERkids could benefit from up to £500 the further participants walk, cycle and run! The charity provides children in East Renfrewshire with additional support needs with weekly club activities, for social interaction, independence and learning new skills.
Beat the Street was devised by GP Dr William Bird to make exercise and physical activity fun by introducing a competitive game element and has been played in towns and cities from the north of Scotland, to Eastbourne on the south coast.
The game has previously taken part in various parts of East Renfrewshire and was played in of Barrhead and Newtown Mearns in 2019 when 6,942 people played and walked, cycled and wheeled 62,063 miles. It also took place across the whole of the East Renfrewshire area in 2020 when participants clocked up an amazing 69,679 miles.
Beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes will be placed on lampposts around the area for the duration of the four-week game. Players are invited to walk, cycle and wheel between the Beat Boxes scoring points as they go, with prizes for the teams that travel the furthest.
Primary school pupils will be provided with a card and map while the wider community can pick up a contactless card from a distribution point listed at www.beatthestreet.me/eastrenfrewshire
Players then travel between the 45 Beat Boxes scoring points with their fobs or cards as they go. The further players travel, the more points they score for their community or school team. Each week is themed with different activities to help participants get the most out of their Beat the Street experience.
Beat the Street Barrhead, Newton Mearns & Neilston has been commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council with support from Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme and Scotland's Towns Partnership’s Scotland Loves Local Fund. It is being delivered by Intelligent Health.
Councillor Tony Buchanan, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have the Beat the Street game back again – it’s such an innovative and compelling game for anyone of any age, and invites players to explore the hidden gems on their doorsteps. Let’s see how far we can go this time!”
